What else is new?

Hello, and welcome to What Else Is New? My name is Catherine and I’m obsessed with all things pop culture. Movies, TV, music, books, sports (yes, sports are culture), celebrity shenanigans– I love it all.

Consider this my pop culture brain dump. Here, not only will I be discussing the latest media that I’m consuming, but I’ll also be exploring important questions like:

Why does Hollywood keep casting the same 5-6 white guys in everything?

When will rom-coms finally be back?

When will we be released from the shackles of milquetoast YA and chick lit adaptations?

Will there ever be another Song of the Summer?

And

What DOES Sofia Carson have on those execs at Netflix??

I decided to name this blog What Else Is New? for a couple of reasons:

1) I genuinely want to know what’s new

I don’t know if it’s my self-/un-diagnosed ADHD or because I’m a June Gemini, but I get bored very easily. I’m constantly seeking out what’s new and what’s next. My dad used to make fun of me and say I would buy anything as long as the word “new” was somewhere on the label. It may have been funny at the time, but I find that new is especially important right now considering…

2) (Almost) nothing is actually new

In an entertainment landscape that is so heavily relying on sequels, reboots, remakes, and established IP I’m looking for something different. Something that stands out. When I think about the current state of media, it’s actually a bible verse that comes to mind: “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9, NIV). Basically no one seems to have any new ideas.

In this blog I’ll be talking not only about pop culture, what's (actually) new, and the things that are exciting me, but also about what it means to us more broadly. I hope you’ll join me, engage in conversation, and share with your friends as we try to determine - what else is new?
